CASE STUDY — ORACLE AUDIT DEFENSE & COMPLIANCE REMEDIATION

$5M Saved: Oracle's Audit Claim Fully Avoided, Then Moved to Third-Party Support for 50% Annual Savings

How a full compliance remediation — reconfigured VMware clusters and the removal of auto-installed database option programs — closed out Oracle's audit claim entirely, and how a subsequent move to third-party support cut ongoing Oracle costs in half.

Client Snapshot: A large Indian diversified conglomerate running Oracle Database and Middleware workloads on VMware virtualized infrastructure, targeted by an Oracle license compliance audit.

The Challenge

Oracle issued a license audit notice citing non-compliance on the client's VMware-virtualized Oracle Database and Middleware estate, arguing the deployment did not limit licensable capacity as required. On that basis, Oracle proposed a claim ranging between $5M and $7.5M — with the exposure still open to interpretation and negotiation.

Our Approach

Rizen conducted an internal license assessment and identified the true drivers of non-compliance — including additional Oracle Database option programs that had been installed by default alongside the core database install, but were never licensed or intentionally used. Rizen designed and executed a remedial strategy: reconfiguring the client's VMware clusters and hosts to properly bound the licensable environment, and removing the unintended option programs — bringing the client to full compliance on its own technical footing. In parallel, Rizen built a communication and defense strategy for engaging Oracle. As the case dragged past two quarters, and with Oracle able to withhold technical support on an unresolved case, Rizen proactively moved the client to third-party support — removing that leverage while cutting ongoing costs.

The Results

$5M–$7.5M audit claim fully avoided: technical remediation and a documented defense position closed Oracle's claim without any settlement payment.

Oracle's support leverage removed proactively: rather than risk Oracle withholding technical support on an unresolved case, Rizen moved the client to third-party support before that leverage could be used.

Full compliance achieved through remediation, not negotiation: reconfiguring VMware clusters and hosts, and removing unintended, auto-installed database option programs, brought the client to a fully compliant position directly.

50% cut in annual Oracle technical support costs: the move to third-party support delivered immediate, ongoing savings independent of the audit outcome.

Hidden non-compliance eliminated at the source: option programs installed by default alongside the core database install — never knowingly used — were identified and removed, closing a compliance gap the client didn't know existed.

Oracle has gone quiet since: based on the final compliance data Rizen shared, Oracle has not progressed the case further.

A documented defense strategy backed every response to Oracle: Rizen built the client's communication and defense position throughout the more-than-two-quarter engagement.

Independent, client-side advisory throughout: Rizen managed the assessment, remediation, defense, and support transition end-to-end, representing only the client's interest.
